Are you experiencing jaw pain? Do you know what causes the pain? A pain in the jaw can be caused by TMJ disorders or also known as Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders.<\/p>\n

TMJ or the Temporomandibular Joints<\/a> are the jaw joints and muscles that allows you to open and close your mouth. These joints are located on each side of your head and help in chewing, swallowing and speaking. TMJ also aids in controlling your lower jaw or mandible by moving side-to-side, backward and forward. Each TMJ contains a disc between the ball and socket, which enables the jaw to glide or open.<\/p>\n

According to research<\/a>, there are many possible causes of TMJ disorders, and these are arthritis, injury, dental surgery, infections, stress and teeth grinding, autoimmune disease, and tooth and jaw alignment.<\/p>\n

Part of the dental assessment includes checking for jaw pain, joint, and muscle tenderness, popping and clicking of the jaw. Once diagnosed, your dentist may refer you to a medical physician or another specialized dentist.<\/p>\n
