How to Prevent Halitosis or Bad Breath?

 In News

Bad breath or Halitosis is one of the most common dental problems that people of all ages and races suffer. According to American Dental Association, 90% of Halitosis cases root from the oral cavity, and this means that to prevent this condition, you have to focus on practicing proper oral hygiene.

Regular brushing, rinsing, and flossing will help prevent bacteria from accumulating in your mouth. When bacteria breeds in your oral cavity and you don’t take care of your teeth, gums and other parts of your oral cavity, plaque builds up, and this can cause odor-causing bacteria, which leads to Halitosis.

When brushing your teeth, do it for at least 2 minutes, twice a day and change your toothbrush every two to three months. Also, don’t forget to brush your tongue as well. Floss once daily and rinse with mouthwash.

In addition to proper oral hygiene, drinking lots of water can prevent bad breath. Water helps cleanse your mouth of food residues and keeps your mouth moist. When you have a dry mouth, you are more prone to odor-causing bacteria.

Chewing gum and munching carrots or celeries can stimulate your saliva and prevent Halitosis caused by dry mouth. Moreover, eating can prevent acid from building up in your stomach and rising to your mouth causing Halitosis.

Following the above methods can prevent you from having bad breath. To learn more about how to manage and treat Halitosis, visit us at Dr. Sidarous and Associates in Saint-Laurent, Quebec!
