Knocked Out Tooth: What to do?

 In News

One of the most serious dental emergencies is having a knocked out tooth. Dentists medically termed this as an ‘ vulsed tooth’. The cause could be due to an accident, assault or playing rough contact sports. When you have this dental emergency problem, it is essential that you know what to do to prevent any dental complications.

Here are some essential tips you can follow when you experience a knocked out tooth:

  • Handle your tooth with utmost care. Keep it moist all the time and make sure that it’s not dry and dirty.
  • Do not touch the root of your tooth and you can only hold the top part of your tooth or the crown.
  • If possible, reinsert your tooth to the socket as soon as possible. Hold it in place by biting a gauze pad and keep your jaws together to apply pressure.
  • If you can’t put them back into the right socket, keep them moist all the time by placing it between your gums and cheek. You can also put it in a cup of water or milk.
  • If your avulsed tooth is dirty, you can rinse it with milk or lukewarm water but make sure not to scrub or scrape it.
  • Control bleeding with sterile gauze, if there’s any.
  • Knocked out tooth can be re-implanted in most cases but it depends on the amount of time it was out of your socket. If an avulsed tooth is re-implanted within 30 minutes, there is a higher chance of success. To ensure that you get the right treatment, once you have a knocked out tooth, go to your dentist as soon as possible.
